Common Interview Questions for Drug Safety Physician
Prepare for your interview by reviewing these frequently asked questions. Click on a question to reveal the answer.
What are the key elements you evaluate when performing a medical assessment of an adverse event?
A thorough medical assessment includes evaluating the seriousness (life‑threatening, hospitalization, disability), expectedness based on the product label, causality using standardized algorithms (WHO‑UMC, Naranjo), temporal relationship, patient medical history, concomitant medications, and the clinical relevance of the event. Documentation of each element with supporting evidence is essential for regulatory reporting.
Explain the difference between a SUSAR and a non‑serious adverse event.
A SUSAR (Suspected Unexpected Serious Adverse Reaction) is an adverse reaction that is both serious and unexpected based on the reference safety information. It requires expedited reporting to health authorities within defined timelines. A non‑serious adverse event does not meet seriousness criteria and is typically reported in periodic safety reports rather than expedited submissions.
How do you determine if an adverse event is reportable to the CDSCO?
Reportability to the CDSCO is determined by assessing seriousness, unexpectedness, and causality. If the event is serious and unexpected, or if it is a serious adverse event that is expected but requires expedited reporting under Indian regulations, it must be submitted within the stipulated timeframe (usually 15 days for serious, unexpected events). The product’s reference safety information and local guidelines guide this decision.
